Balkan Geophysical Society was founded a quarter century ago, in 1993 in the town of Florina, Greece. The main objective of BGS is to promote geophysics in all fields and to support cooperation between member states. The Society was established between the professional organizations of Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Turkey and Yugoslavia (replaced after 2007 by the Association of Geophysicists of Serbia) and Hungary joined the organization in 2009. During its 25-year existence, BGS successfully fulfills its task through joint projects, publishing a journal, congresses organization, workshops, courses, etc.

The Congress of the Balkan Geophysical Society has established itself as an important forum for the realization of these goals and the creation of the necessary contacts not only between geophysicists from Balkan countries but also with other professionals and organizations on European and world scale. Congresses were organized in every three years at the beginning, and since 2009 in every two years, bringing together scientists, students, professionals, investors and producers with common interests in Earth sciences and in particular Geophysics.
